Heritage places and precincts

Having a heritage listed property does not mean that it cannot be changed or improved. It means that any modifications need to be thoroughly assessed to make sure that the heritage characteristics of the property are not lost.

Council Planning Scheme Local Heritage listing and Heritage Precincts

You will usually need to obtain planning approval for any use or development of the site, if your property is Heritage listed or contained within a Heritage Precinct under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme - Hobart.

To find out if your property is Heritage Listed or is in the Heritage Precinct, please see the planning schemes page.

Tasmanian Heritage Register

Your property may also be listed on the Tasmanian Heritage Register. Our officers can tell you if it is, or you can check with the Tasmanian Heritage Council on 1300 850 332.

If your property is on the Tasmanian Heritage Register it is considered to be of state heritage significance and is protected under the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995.

Any proposal for work to these places will be referred to the Tasmanian Heritage Council.
