New Town netball courts and bowls upgrade

New Town netball courts and bowls upgrade

We have completed on upgrades to the New Town Sporting Precinct. It includes new netball courts and updated lawn bowls infrastructure.

The project began in February 2025 and was completed in July 2025.

The project has resulted in:

  • two outdoor netball courts for the Southern Tasmania Netball Association (STNA). They have LED floodlights and fencing.
  • new shade infrastructure and synthetic grass around the edges of an in-use bowling green at the Buckingham Bowls Club.

The additional netball courts allows for more teams to participate in the sport.

Infrastructure upgrades at the bowls club results in more comfort and sun protection for players and spectators. This creates a more enjoyable space for socialising and competing.

The project was a collaboration between Buckingham Bowls Club, Southern Tasmanian Netball Association, the Tasmanian Government and the City of Hobart.

New Town Sporting Precinct Master Plan

This project is a small step in achieving the ambition set out in the New Town Sporting Precinct Master Plan. This was endorsed by the Hobart City Council in 2024.

The facility is used by more than 300 000 people each year. The plan sets out to preserve and improve the facility as a vital sporting and community hub.

You can read more about the long-term plans for the facility in our Hobart News story.
