Leonard Wall Valley Street Reserve
This public reserve is home to lovely remnant bushland between Mt Stuart and West Hobart and attracts a range of wildlife, including yellow-tailed black cockatoos and locals have even seen goshawks in the area.
It was established by the City of Hobart in 2003 and named in honour of the significant community contribution made by the late Leonard Wall, a life member of the local progress association and well known ornithologist.
If you enter the reserve from Mt Stuart Road you walk through beautifully landscaped grasslands and correa before entering a small valley and a stand of remnant blue gums.
Further down towards the Mellifont Street entrance is the Valley Street Community Orchard, which is looked after by locals and includes heritage apples, almonds and figs.
The Valley Street Community Orchard Group re-established the small orchard to create an orchard in miniature for urban enthusiasts to tend and enjoy.
The short walk through this reserves includes views out over Hobart and up towards Knocklofty Reserve and its rugged sandstone cliffs.
The reserve is an important habitat sanctuary and acts as a stepping stone for native species moving through Hobart’s urban landscape. It is just a hop, skip and jump away from Providence Valley Reserve, and then Knocklofty Reserve.
