Zig Zag Track Restoration Project

Restoring the Zig Zag Track.

The Zig Zag Track restoration project has been successfully completed, and the track is again open to the public.

The restoration project was undertaken over three summers using local stone and gravel. The detailed track work was carried out by City of Hobart ‘trackies’ as well as specialist track builders from local Tasmanian firms.

The Zig Zag Track is a short but challenging hike that starts at 750 metres above sea level and snakes its way up to the top of kunanyi / Mt Wellington.

It takes visitors up through subalpine and then alpine country with views of towering rock pillars and the River Derwent, out into Storm Bay.

The 100-year-old track is one of Tasmania's finest short walks.

Finalisation of the Zig Zag Track Restoration Project completes seven years of major trackwork by the City of Hobart on kunanyi / Mt Wellington that has seen the restoration of the Pinnacle Track, the Organ Pipes Track and the Zig Zag Track

The project was completed in time for the 2024 kunanyi Mountain Run, which, now in its third year, attracts competitors from interstate and overseas.

Repairing a much-loved walking track

For more than a century the Zig Zag Track has been a major walking route to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, but the elements had taken their toll, and the track needs considerable work to repair erosion and make it safer for walkers and runners.

This project began in January 2022.
