Liverpool Street embankment improvements

Liverpoool Street landslip

In May 2018 an extreme weather event resulted in significant flooding to properties across Hobart. During this storm event the embankment along Liverpool Street between Molle Street and Liverpool Crescent experienced a landslip, due to the excess water flowing overland.

Since that time the City of Hobart has been working to upgrade the stormwater and road infrastructure in Liverpool Street, West Hobart to ensure the stormwater system has greater capacity to cope during increased rainfall events and more extreme weather, and the potential risk of damage to properties and the roadway is reduced.

The City secured Australian Government emergency disaster relief funding to undertake remedial steps along this stretch of Liverpool Street.

First Stage - Completed

In August 2020 work was carried out to extend the stormwater main in Liverpool Street and install new drainage pits between 356-290 Liverpool Street. This work was to reduce the surface flow during high rainfall events which disrupts road usage and negatively impacts the existing road embankment.

Second Stage - Commenced February 2021

The next stage of works commenced in February 2021 and involves the construction of a retaining wall within the road embankment opposite 369-377 Liverpool Street. This is necessary work to provide long-term stabilisation of the embankment and the roadway above.

This stage of work will be done in phases:

Phase 1 - Completed - February-March 2021

The first phase was the relocation of a water main in the embankment which involved some excavation works. This was completed in early March.

Phase 2 - Underway - March-April 2021

A retaining wall is being built within the road embankment opposite 369-377 Liverpool Street, which will provide long-term stabilisation of the embankment and the road above. This work is expected to be completed by the beginning of April.

There will be minimal disruptions to parking and traffic along Liverpool Street during this stage with the exception to short duration lane closures to assist access to the site. Traffic management controls will be in place to ensure the safety of residents and crews.

Phase 3 - Planned - April-June 2021

The final stage to follow the embankment works will include a new curb constructed along this section of Liverpool Street, and a resurfacing of the roadway. This is expected to take start in mid-April.

Parking adjacent to the embankment will need to be temporarily relocated along with a short duration road closure during the road surface works in mid-May. We will make every effort to minimise disruptions and will keep you informed of the scheduled road closure with a two weeks' notice.

The City of Hobart will make every effort to minimise disruption throughout the works, subject to any necessary construction and safety requirements. Road users and pedestrians are asked to comply with directions given and signs placed for guidance at the beginning and end of the works.

We acknowledge this necessary work will cause some minor disruption and thank you for your patience while this essential work is carried out to ensure the long-term stabilisation of the roadway, and public safety.

The City of Hobart and construction contractor MS Civil will also notify nearby residents by mail at key project milestones such as through this newsletter.

Who is doing the construction work?

The City of Hobart has appointed contractor MS Civil to undertake the first and second phases of this work. MS Civil will be coordinating day-to-day activities onsite and liaising directly with any residents affected. A contractor for phase three is yet to be appointed.
