Elizabeth Street Retail Precinct Upgrade
Elizabeth Street retail precinct – known locally as midtown – will be the third project to be progressed under the City of Hobart’s Local Retail Precincts Plan. The City has worked with local communities in Lenah Valley and New Town to develop projects to upgrade those shopping areas. A refreshed Lenah Valley shopping area will be completed in 2018 and construction will occur in New Town in 2019.
The focus will now shift to Elizabeth Street with planning to commence in 2018.
About the plan
The Local Retail Precinct upgrade projects aim to improve pedestrian access and amenity in busy shopping areas, to revitalise the streets to encourage activation and make them more welcoming, sociable and comfortable to spend time in. Quality streetscapes encourage people to shop locally and linger longer, thereby supporting our local economies and strengthening community ties.
In Elizabeth Street, a dynamic group of local traders, service providers and organisations, as well as a growing local community of students, inner city residents, city workers and visitors, will benefit from improvements to this busy walking corridor. As with the Lenah Valley and New Town projects, a comprehensive community engagement program will be undertaken to encourage stakeholders to participate in the planning process, and to ensure that community priorities are reflected in the project.
Although a design is yet to be developed, streetscape improvements that may be within the scope of the project include:
- Renewed footpaths
- Improved pedestrian crossing points
- Landscaping and high quality surface finishes
- Deciduous street trees
- New street furniture
