Campbell Street – traffic and parking arrangements trial
Campbell Street is being transformed into an attractive and welcoming urban space with construction of some of Hobart’s most significant developments in and around the area, including the Royal Hobart Hospital’s new inpatient precinct, known as K-Block, the University of Tasmania and Theatre Royal’s performing arts centre, known as The Hedberg, and the University of Tasmania’s Medical Science buildings.
In conjunction with the State Government and the University of Tasmania, the City of Hobart has been working on ways to best support these projects to provide safe environments for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists who will be using the precinct during and after the construction period.
Drawing on the results of the road operation assessment of Campbell Street conducted over the past three years and responding to the needs of the Royal Hobart Hospital’s K-Block, the City has developed a set of traffic and parking arrangements that was implemented in Campbell Street between Liverpool and Collins streets from 13 December 2019.
As direct patient access to the Royal Hobart Hospital K-Block’s admission, discharge and transit lounge facilities will be possible from Campbell Street, to create a safe environment for patients, carers and visitors, the arrangements provide short-term parking for K-Block’s patient drop-off and pick-up point combined with a shared slow-speed lane for cyclists and service vehicles and two through traffic lanes.
The arrangements will be in place for 12 months followed by a Council review to determine what the permanent configuration of this section of Campbell Street should be.
