Hobart's Midtown precinct will be the scene of the next City of Hobart Block Party, with traders inviting the community to celebrate the festive season this weekend.

With live entertainment, children’s activities and a special community Christmas tree featuring hundreds of hand-knitted or crocheted squares, the party will spill on to Elizabeth Street between Melville and Brisbane streets.

Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds invited Hobart residents to enjoy the Saturday afternoon offerings.

“The party starts at 3pm on Saturday and will continue into the early evening, so it’s perfect to bring the family down for some shopping, activities and dinner,” Cr Reynolds said.

“It’s a great way to meet the people behind our local businesses and explore this part of the city and everything it offers.

“There will be live music throughout the event to provide a party atmosphere and it will be a real community feel – an opportunity to catch up with friends to start celebrating the festive season.”

Live entertainment includes the ExitLeft Festive Choir, solo musicians Robert Meesri, Sharn Hitchen and Sam Bester, and the Urban Dance Group.

Children’s craft activities will be hosted in the UTAS foyer and include workshops to make Christmas tree decorations, reindeer pots and Christmas cards.

The community Christmas tree, which features a frame donated by the City of Hobart, will be the centrepiece of event, showcasing the creativity of the Midtown community.

The Midtown Block Party is on this Saturday 5 December from 3pm to 7pm.

Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic between Melville and Brisbane streets from 1pm until 9pm. The western footpath will be maintained as a pedestrian thoroughfare.

The Block Party program is a collaborative program with local business owners and operators to support the business community as it recovers from the impacts of COVID-19.

Further Block Parties will be held in South Hobart, Brisbane Street, and Red Square the following weekend.
