Decisions around building height limits for the Hobart city centre will be considered as part of a collaborative planning process with the state government.

The Hobart City Council tonight resolved not to immediately enter into a process to amend the Hobart Interim Planning Scheme and Sullivans Cove Planning Scheme.

Instead, building heights will be considered through the Central Hobart Precincts Plan, which is intended to address current and future population, social, environmental and economic trends, traffic, housing supply and other issues of significance to the city centre.

The current planning scheme will continue to be the rules by which proposals will be assessed. The scheme currently identifies a permitted building height of 30 metres in the CBD, with discretion to consider and approve proposals in excess of this height on a case-by-case basis.
