Thirst-quenching tap water can be found with a click, with the City of Hobart now featured on a mobile app that maps out the nearest free drinking water supply.

Under the City of Hobart’s water refill program, about 20 new public drinking water facilities will be installed over three years.

These will be added to the 30 existing public drinking water stations that have now been registered on a free app that encourages the use of reusable bottles.

“Hobartians now have more options than ever to stay hydrated, while avoiding the purchase of single-use plastic containers,” Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds said.

“We know many people in our community are actively seeking out ways to reduce their waste. “This program is a simple yet effective way we can help Hobart residents and visitors use less plastic day-to-day.”

Tap – Find Water Anywhere can be used to locate the nearest drinking water source, whether it be a public fountain or bottle refill station, or a private business that has volunteered to provide water refills.

Hobart businesses are urged to list their premises on the app as refill stations, to provide as many options as possible for the community to access water.

“We’re very appreciative of the businesses that have already signed up as refill stations or who are considering doing so,” Cr Reynolds said. “It’s a great way of showing your commitment to helping to reduce waste in our city.”

To participate, a business or organisation should register on the app and place a window sticker in their shopfront. These stickers will be provided free of charge by the City of Hobart.

The Water Refill Program is another in a series of actions to reduce waste and plastics, and continues the City’s progress towards zero waste to landfill. As part of this objective, a portable water refill station is also available to encourage reusable bottles and cups at City-run events.
