Popular walking tracks reopened

Published on 18 May 2018

Almost all of the walking tracks on kunanyi / Mt Wellington are now open after taking a battering from the storm that hit Hobart on Thursday 10 May.

City of Hobart staff have inspected more than 120km of tracks throughout Hobart’s bushland since the deluge, investigating potential safety hazards and damage.

Pinnacle Road opened to the summit on Saturday 26 May.

Tracks that remain closed are:

  • North-South Track between Old Hobartians Track and Kangaroo Fire Trail - the New Town Rivulet crossing is impassable.
  • The Lost World track.
  • Pinnacle Track (closed for construction)
  • Middle Track from Fern Tree to the reservoir tank.

There has been extensive damage on the mountain and some issues remain with overhanging trees and bridge stability.  People are advised to follow track warning signs as City staff continue assessing damage and prioritising track and major infrastructure repairs.

  • On tracks that are now open people should proceed with caution - extensive areas of erosion and debris from the storm remain.
  • All bushland parks and reserves managed by the City of Hobart are now open including Wellington Park, Queens Domain, Waterworks Reserve, Bicentennial Park, Ridgeway Park, Knocklofty Reserve, Ancanthe Park and Cornelian Bay.

The City is committed to keeping people safe on the mountain and we advise visitors to check the latest Pinnacle Road status updates here: Current Pinnacle Road status
