Have your say - Draft Queens Domain Summit Plan 2018

Published on 16 April 2018

The City of Hobart is proposing to bring the Queens Domain Summit back to life for walkers, picnickers, cyclists and dog lovers under a plan to rejuvenate the area.

The site

The Upper Queens Domain Summit was a thriving hub of activity in the 1980s, with the Adventure Playground attracting families from all over Hobart. The play equipment and toilet were gradually removed as they deteriorated, but the car park and picnic facilities remain.  The Queens Domain Master Plan 2013 identified the summit as needing attention due to the run down picnic facilities and lack of definition in some car parks.

The draft plan focusses on the Upper Summit, both northern and central lookouts, the Lower Summit, water reservoirs and the track and road network extending between them. The proposal takes advantage of the expansive views and is consistent with the area’s natural and cultural heritage values.

The plan

The draft plan proposes:

  • New toilets and three new bookable picnic pavilions that blend into the natural surroundings at the Upper Summit.
  • Upgraded picnic facilities at the Lower Summit.
  • Formalising and upgrading public access to the TasWater reservoirs.
  • Improved parking and traffic management, with the current summit loop road altered to direct all traffic to the Upper Summit car park, and new traffic calming measures implemented on the summit road.
  • Upgrading the track network around the Summit with landscape features to encourage visitor enjoyment and understanding of the Domain.
