Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay

Published on 07 February 2018

The City of Hobart is hosting the final Tasmanian leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on Friday 9 February 2018. The Hobart leg of the relay will end with a free community celebration at PW1, featuring Tasmanian singer-wongwriter Asta.

After visiting Clarence and Glenorchy earlier in the day, the baton will begin its journey through Hobart from Constitution Dock, travelling across the water to Sandy Bay. It will then travel by foot along Sandy Bay Road, through Battery Point and down Castray Esplanade.

You can cheer on the runners along the route between 4.45 and 5.30 pm. Hobart’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, Fay Ibbott, will carry the baton for part of the relay on behalf of the City of Hobart.

Traffic will be disrupted in the greater Hobart area for most of the day as the baton starts in the Clarence municipal area in the morning, comes across to Glenorchy and then on to Hobart in the late afternoon.

If you are leaving town for the long weekend, please be aware of the relay route and the rolling road closures on Sandy Bay Road after 4.30 pm. View the full list of road closures here: Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay

Community Celebration

The baton will be welcomed at the end of the relay by the City at a shared community celebration at PW1, 4.30–6.30 pm, which will include entertainment and official speeches. The Queen's Baton will be carried on stage by local hero Campbell Remess at 5.30 pm.

Thirteen-year-old Campbell was nominated for his charity work with Project 365 by Campbell, sewing teddy bears for sick children at Royal Hobart Hospital.

Activities include:

  • two sets by Tasmanian singer-songwriter Asta, from 5.40 pm
  • rising Tasmanian star Madelena, who will perform a set of her original songs
  • child-friendly activities, including Social Circus and Imagination Playground
  • Borobi, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) mascot
