City of Hobart hosts STEM information evening

The City of Hobart is encouraging people with an interest in the City’s future to attend an information evening and public forum on TasSTEM.

To be held on Wednesday 27 September 2017 at the Hobart Town Hall, the free public information session and forum is being hosted by the City of Hobart in partnership with the University of Tasmania and the Mercury newspaper.

Lord Mayor of Hobart, Alderman Sue Hickey said:  “The forum is part of the Council’s desire to see the University of Tasmania’s STEM proposal at the centre of a City Deal for Hobart.”

Following a notice of motion by Alderman Philip Cocker in relation to the Council supporting UTAS’ STEM proposal as the basis of a City Deal, the Council resolved to hold a community forum whereby the importance of the UTAS STEM precinct project could be discussed with the community.

Alderman Cocker said: “A City Deal to help build Tasmania’s capacity in the crucial STEM subjects and deliver high-level interdisciplinary research with the potential to create new economic sectors across the state was an opportunity too good to miss.

“The promotion of STEM subjects provides an opportunity to improve educational outcomes for all Tasmanians,” said Alderman Cocker.

The Lord Mayor said that the Council believed the University’s STEM proposal will bring together what is needed to address the state’s economic and educational challenges.

“The STEM project ticks so many boxes.  While it is about higher education outcomes for Tasmanians, it will also result in improved public transport access to the city and improved connectivity and mobility throughout the city.  It will also encourage more housing accommodation and I expect will lead to significant investment by the private sector seeking to take advantage of the increased opportunities that will arise,” said the Lord Mayor.

The Lord Mayor encouraged community members of the southern region of Tasmania to get involved and attend the TasSTEM information evening and community forum.

“By coming along to the session, people can hear about the future for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines in Tasmania,” said the Lord Mayor.

The program includes a panel discussion and an opportunity for Q&A with the panel members and audience interaction.

The information evening and forum is free and will be held on Wednesday 27 September 2017. Doors open at 5:30pm for a 6pm start at the Hobart Town Hall.
