Fuzhou, China (2017)

Tasmania has an established sister state relationship with the Fujian Province, which dates back to 1981. The sister state relationship, among other positive activities, has seen strong educational links forged with Fuzhou’s, Miniiang University. This relationship has resulted in over a thousand Minjiang students undertaking a period of study at the University of Tasmania.

With the State’s established sister state relationship and the Council’s desire to underpin a broader economic strategy for Hobart, the council considered a relationship with Fuzhou as a worthy pursuit.

Formal relationship discussions between Fuzhou and Hobart commenced in May 2014 when the then Mayor of Fuzhou wrote to Hobart’s Lord Mayor inviting a Hobart delegation to visit Fuzhou to lay the foundations of friendship. In March 2015, the City of Hobart joined the Premier of Tasmania during a trade mission to China, which included a visit to Fuzhou where city friendship discussions ensued.

A reciprocal delegation from Fuzhou, led by Madam Lin (Vice President of the Fuzhou People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries), came to Hobart in November 2016. The group consisted of 28 government, cultural and business delegates. Business networking occurred through the Australia Fujian Association (Tasmania) and via a State Government led meeting with discussions also held regarding the signing of a friendship city agreement.

Some of the top cultural performers from the Fujian Province gave a free cultural performance on Hobart’s Parliament Lawns during the 2016 Fuzhou delegations visit.
