Charlie's Country

Wide Angle Cinema is a curated programme of important Australian films screening every month at the Wide Angle Screen Centre in South Hobart.  With support from the City of Hobart, Wide Angle Tasmania presents a feature length programme for free to audiences.  It’s a great opportunity for audiences to access Australian film, meet other film lovers and hear from the actors, directors and producers at a post film Q&A.

This month Wide Angle Cinema will will feature Charlie’s Country. Written by Rolf de Heer and David Gulpilil as a collaborative project, Charlie’s Country stars Gulpilil as blackfella Charlie, who is getting older, and is out of sorts.

Gulpilil appears in every scene in a film that starts on a light note when Charlie helps police capture two drug dealers.

But the government’s Northern Territory intervention is making life more difficult on his remote community, what with the proper policing of whitefella laws that don’t generally make much sense, and Charlie’s kin seeming more interested in going along with things than doing anything about it.

So Charlie takes off, to live the old way, but in doing so sets off a chain of events in his life that has him return to his community chastened, and somewhat the wiser.

All donations made at the door will support Wide Angle to continue our work developing, supporting and encouraging Tasmanian filmmakers in 2019.
