Residential parking permits

Residential parking permits

Residential parking zones are provided on streets that are heavily used by commuters (for example streets within walking distance to the city centre) so local residents have a better chance of parking near their property.

While commuters can park their cars on residential streets, they must follow the parking restriction periods (usually one or two hours) shown on the parking signs, and cars can't be left there all day.

If you live in an area like this and have no off-street parking available, you may be able to get a permit for unrestricted (all-day) parking within the designated zone. You can get up to two permits per household (depending on availability of off-street parking). In exceptional circumstances, you may be able to get three permits per household but you need to apply to the Chief Executive Officer in writing for this.

Applying for a permit

You can apply for a new permit or renew your permit by completing the online form:

Residential parking permit application

Our officers will check how many off-street parking spaces have been allocated by the Residential Parking Scheme in your requested area. Approval of the application is based on availability. You must also agree to the permit conditions as part of your application.

Once you receive your permit, please place it on the lower passenger side of the vehicle's windscreen in a non-tinted area with all details clearly visible. The permit is only valid in residential parking zones near your residence and does not guarantee a space. These zones can be identified by the wording on the sign 'Authorised Residents Excepted'.

If you sell the car, please remove the permit sticker.

Metered space parking permits

This type of permit parking only applies where a separate house is used as a residential dwelling within what is mostly a commercial district, where parking meters are installed.

There are limited streets in Hobart where this type of permit can be issued:

  • Goulburn Street – between Harrington and Barrack Streets
  • Barrack Street – between Liverpool and Goulburn Streets
  • Murray Street – between Melville and Brisbane Streets
  • Campbell Street – between Brisbane and Patrick Streets
  • Brisbane Street – between Campbell and Argyle Streets
  • Wilmot Street

You can apply for one permit per property, by completing and submitting the online form:

Residents of the CBD and immediate adjacent areas

Residents of properties located within the area shown below may be eligible for three different forms of assistance in finding parking.

CBD Parking Area

Parking Assistance

The three types of assistance available to residents of the CBD zone are:

A - Resident Permit for On-Street Resident Permit Zone

Residents may be eligible for a resident parking permit in an existing resident permit zone outside of the CBD. This would be on a single identified street section only (for example Melville Street between Barrack Street and Harrington Street). This permit allows the permitted vehicle to park all day in designated resident parking zones.

B - Resident Permit allowing free parking on metered space until 10.00am

Residents may be eligible for a resident parking permit that allows them to park in a parking meter space without paying a fee or observing the time limit until 10.00am. Again this would only be in a single designated street section (for example Liverpool Street between Barrack Street and Harrington Street).

Because the very centre of the CBD has very high parking demand, permits cannot be issued for streets in the block bounded by Harrington Street – Bathurst Street – Argyle Street – Macquarie Street, or on Elizabeth Street between Bathurst Street and Brisbane Street.

Permits can be issued for other metered on-street spaces within the CBD zone.

C - Priority on Waiting List for Council Long Term Off-Street Car parking Space

Residents are able to be given priority over non-residents on the waiting lists for parking spaces in one of City's long term off-street car parks.
