Under Clause 19 & 21 of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, the Hobart City Council has the authority to close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities.
Closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when it is felt that benefits for the community justify the closure.

Sullivans Cove December 2012
During the summer of 2012/2013, the Sullivans Cove area will again be a focal point for festivals and events. As in previous years, several events will be undertaken during this period that will require the closure of roads in the area.
Expanded Outdoor Dining Licences - Salamanca Place
The Council has given approval for existing outdoor dining areas on Salamanca Place to be extended into the parking spaces directly in front of each licenced area at the following dates and times:
- Friday 7 December 2012 (3pm to 12 midnight)
- Friday 14 December 2012 (3pm to 12 midnight)
- Thursday 20 December 2012 (3pm to 12 midnight)
- Friday 21 December 2012 (3pm to 12 midnight)
- Monday 31 December 2012 (3pm to 12:30am)
It should be noted that businesses must apply for a permit for this expanded use.
Salamanca Place (Montpelier Retreat to Woobys Lane) - Friday 14 December 2012
Council has given permission for a portion of Salamanca Place (between Montpelier Retreat and Woobys Lane) to be closed to traffic on the above date, from 5pm to midnight, to allow for the expansion of outdoor dining areas.
Salamanca Place (Montpelier Retreat to Woobys Lane) - Friday 21 December 2012
Council has given permission for a portion of Salamanca Place (between Montpelier Retreat and Woobys Lane) to be closed to traffic on the above date, from 5pm to 4am, to allow for the expansion of outdoor dining areas. Council has also given approval for the Salamanca Lawns, on this section of Salamanca Place, to be utilised by Knopwoods Retreat on this evening, as has happened in previous years.
TasPorts, Yacht Race Closures - 28 December 2012 to 4 January 2013
Council understands that TasPorts will again be closing Franklin Wharf to through vehicle traffic for the events associated with the yacht races. The closure is expected to be in place from 6am on 28 December 2012 until 6am on 4 January 2013. For special details about the event, please contact TasPorts on 1300 366 742.
Taste Festival Preparation - Thursday 27 December 2012
To facilitate preparation of the Taste Festival venue, Castray Esplanade, between the Silos and Morrison Street will be closed from approximately 6am onwards on 27 December 2012. This section of Castray Esplanade will remain closed through the remainder of the Taste Festival, and will reopen at approximately 6pm on Friday 4 January 2013.
Taste Festival - Friday 28 December 2012 to Thursday 3 January 2013
Castray Esplanade, between the Silos and Morrison Street, and Morrison Street between Salamanca Place and Murray Street will be closed daily between 10am and 11:30pm.
The purpose of this closure is to link the Taste Festival to Salamanca Place and Parliament House Lawns to ease the congestion within the main Taste venue and to increase the pedestrian linkages across Sullivans Cove in general.
Race the Taste - Sunday 30 December 2012
In 2012, the 'Race the Taste' running event will again be held, however it will be moved from the opening day of the Taste to Sunday 30 December 2012. This fun run event will require the closure of the southbound lanes of Morrison Street between Elizabeth Street and the exit from Murray Street Pier Car Park, and the total closure of Morrison Street between the Murray Street Pier Car Park and Salamanca Place. During the event, from 9:30am to 11:30am, there will be no vehicular access along this section of Morrison Street.
New Years Eve - Monday 31 December 2012 to Tuesday 1 January 2013
On the evening of New Years Eve it is planned that the following roads (in addition to those closed by TasPorts) in Sullivans Cove will be closed to vehicular traffic from about 6pm on New Years Eve to about 7am on New Years Day:
- Castray Esplanade (Silos to Morrison Street)
- Morrison Street (Castray Esplanade to Argyle Street)
- Murray Street (Davey Street to Morrison Street)
- Elizabeth Street (Davey Street to Franklin Wharf)
- Despard Street
- Brooke Street
- Salamanca Place
- Gladstone Street (Kirkway Place to Salamanca Place)
While the dates of the events described above are not likely to change, the exact times of road closures for individual events may vary slightly from those described above. On the day prior to each event, an advertisement will be placed in the Mercury describing the extent and times of road closures.
