What is Water Basketball?
Water Basketball is an international sport customised and further developed by The Hobart Aquatic Centre. It involves two mixed teams of 6 players, who swim and pass the ball down the pool to their goal, which is a hoop similar to basketball.
Each player wears flippers (and a cap to identify which team they are playing for.) Goals are scored as two or three points depending how far from the goal you are.
Do I need my own equipment to play?
Although many players prefer to obtain their own set of fins (max 30cm from toe line) and some teams have their own caps, it is not a requirement. Fins, in a variety of sizes, caps and balls are supplied free of charge on the evening.
Who can play?
Adults - male and female (young and old!)
Is it like water polo?
It is similar in the way you pass the ball around the pool, but it is non-contact.
Do you have to be a good swimmer?
If you can swim the length of the Dive pool and are able to use fins then you should be fine to play.
When are games played?
Games are played on most Thursday nights between 7:30pm and 9:30pm in the Dive pool and the far end of the 50 meter pool. Come and have a look to see what it's all about!
Currently the program annually runs 1 regular season from February - June. A short Social Competition (excellent for new players, training purposes and socialising with players from other teams) then takes place and we finish the year with the 2nd regular season, which runs from August - early December.
Do I have to field a full team?
No, both individuals and teams can sign up for a roster. If you don't have a full team we can easily add you to an existing team. Note that full teams are only accepted after consultation with the Water Basketball Board prior to the start of a season.
Can I come and play a game before registering with a Team?
An introductory evening (Come & Try night) is typically held at the start of a new season but players can join at any time during a season.
You can play 3 games with any team before you are required to register with that team.
How much does it cost?
Each player is required to pay a $9.25 entry fee each Water Basketball night ($7.40 regular entry, plus $1.85 membership fee). Water Basketball is not covered by the Aquatic Centre membership.
