Lunar New Year in Hobart

Lunar New Year is celebrated annually across the globe and 2017 is the Year of the Rooster. 

Hobart will host many Lunar New Year celebrations, including free cultural events and festivals to celebrate Lunar New Year 2017. 

Lunar New Year events

Cultural, community and family-friendly events will take place throughout the Hobart region during January and February.

According to Chinese tradition, the whole family would reunite and enjoy a harmonious dinner together to celebrate the safe and sound passing of the year and wish for more prosperity, peace, harmony and love in the coming year. The New Year banquet involves vigorous lion dancing and beautiful cultural performances, as distinguished guests, friends and family gather in a loving, peaceful and celebratory atmosphere, while enjoying delicious Chinese food.

2017 春節嘉年华

When:  Sunday 29 January, 10 am – 4 pm

Where:  Parliament House Lawns, Salamanca Place



This will be the fifth annual Lunar New Year Festival to be organised by the Chinese Community Association of Tasmania.   This festival is held on the picturesque Parliament House Lawns, with lots of activities focused on the family. The program showcases four zones of entertainment, including food, culture, children's activities and performances. There will be many activities including lion dances, dragon dances, cultural displays and non-stop entertainment. Our food stalls will showcase Asian festive foods, and our Panda Zone (children's one) is focused on child friendly interactive activities. This event is supported by the Tasmanian Government and the City of Hobart.

The Lantern Festival is a free family event and aims to provide a cultural experience for the local community. The entertainment program will be performed by our volunteers who are professional dancers and passionate about providing a quality performance.

CHINESE NEW YEAR CONCERT 2017 – Treasures of a Nation

When:  Tuesday 14 February, 7 pm 
Where:  Federation Concert Hall, Davey Street 

With a history of over 50 years, China National Opera and Dance Theatre’s renowned national level orchestra led by conductor Hong Xia and principal gaohu soloist Bai Miao performs music that merges traditional Chinese style with contemporary music.  The orchestra has a unique artistic style that is composed of over 50 musicians many of whom have taken part in national and international instrumental music competitions and received many prizes.  

Treasures of A Nation promises to be a transcendent experience that merges ancient and modern art form, showcasing China's diverse musical heritage and introducing audiences to a new world of music, stunning visuals and virtuosity. Soaring melodies from both traditional Chinese style and contemporary music are guaranteed to ring in the year of the Rooster in breathtaking cultural style.

The orchestra use a combination of western and eastern instruments including the sheng, an ancient flute, the liuqin mandolin, and the gaohu and erhu, sometimes referred to as "the Chinese fiddle".

The orchestra has performed in India, South Africa and Canada. This is their second visit to Australia, following a successful Chinese New Year 2016 Concert.

Facebook Competition

This competition will encourage communication between people attending the various Lunar New Year events around Hobart and the different community organisations involved.

This competition is supported by the City of Hobart and aims to increase awareness of Lunar New Year in Hobart.

Enter the 2017 Lunar New Year Facebook competition being organised through the City of Hobart and you could win a prize.  Post a photo of you attending one of the Lunar New Year events supported by The City of Hobart and a short message about what the Lunar New Year means to you on the Hobart City Guide Facebook page and you could be in the running for five family passes to the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre plus a copy of Salamanca Market: A Short History of a Long Market book, or one of 50 Hobart Town Hall commemorative postcard packs and Lunar New Year caps.

  • Competition prizes:
    • The first prize for the Lunar New Year Facebook competition will be five family passes to the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre valued at $100, plus a copy of Salamanca Market: A Short History of a Long Market valued at $49.95.
    • The runner-up prizes for the Lunar New Year Facebook competition will be 50 postcard packs valued at $5 each and Lunar New Year caps valued at $15 each, given to the next 50 entries drawn.
