Lunar New Year in Hobart

Lunar New Year is celebrated annually across the globe and 2016 is the Year of the Monkey. 

Hobart will host many Lunar New Year celebrations including free cultural events, fine art exhibitions and festivals to celebrate Lunar New Year 2016.

Chinese New Year Concert  

2016 Silk Road


Celebrate the Lunar New Year with 2016 Silk Road, a Chinese New Year Concert performed by the China Shaanxi Folk Orchestra. Shaanxi is a province in China of which Xi’an, Hobart's sister/friendship city, is the capital city.

Date: Saturday 23 January
Time: 6pm - 8pm

2016 Celebration of Year of the Monkey Chinese New Year Banquet

Celebrate the Year of the Monkey at this gala banquet. A formal dress code applies and this event is INVITE ONLY.

2016 Lunar New Year Festival


The family-friendly program includes lion dances, fire crackers, the Children’s Activity Zone, Cultural Zone, Entertainment Zone and Asian Food Zone, dragon boats, a petting zoo and many other activities.  This event is proudly sponsored by the Tasmanian State Government and the City of Hobart in collaboration with our Asian community groups and friends. Entry is FREE.

Tasmanian Chinese Students and Scholars New Year celebration

The evening will feature an entertainment program of ten acts, including dancing and singing, followed by a two course dinner. All are welcome.

‘ZaoHua’ exhibition


‘ZaoHua’ is an exhibition of works by 15 top young contemporary Chinese artists, curated by acclaimed curator Li Zhao. Entry is FREE.

Official opening: Wednesday 17 February from 5:30pm.

Exhibition dates: Thursday 18 - Wednesday 24 February Opening times: 11am - 5pm daily
Venue: Long Gallery, located in the Salamanca Arts Centre, 65-77 Salamanca Place

The exhibition will move on from Hobart to Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

Lunar New Year 2016 Lantern Festival (YuanXiao festival)

Over 1200 lanterns will be exhibited during this FREE, family friendly event. The event program includes lion dancing, Chinese traditional dance, a Chinese costume show, a Chinese rock band, live calligraphy, a Chinese costume stall, kids’ musical, kung fu demonstration, plus stallholders from a variety of cultural communities. Visitors can purchase a Chinese buffet from 12pm. There will be also be beautiful gifts, Tasmanian gourmet Chinese food and drinks available to purchase at the event from 2pm - 4pm

Entry is FREE.

Erhu Fantasy 

Erhu Fantasy is a special concert to celebrate the 2016 Lunar New Year, the Year of the Monkey.

The concert will f
eature Sydney based erhu performer Ying Liu, and Jazz pianist Jerry Zhang The performers will blend the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese traditional instrument, and piano to produce a different sound and feel. Find out more here
