Alternative Education

In partnership with the Department of Education in Tasmania Hobart City Council have established two pioneering programs in the delivery of education for young people who have become disengaged in mainstream school.

Alted

In 2000 Hobart City Council formed a partnership with Elizabeth and Hobart Colleges to develop and provide an alternative education program for young people aged 16 - 18, disengaged from mainstream education.  ALTed is based at the Youth ARC, where young people also have access to the support and encouragement of Youth Workers. Students enrolled in the program participate in an innovative curriculum, individually case managed by the teacher. Through the partnership ALTed students have access to a wide range of educational programs, resources, job placements and accredited courses.  ALTed also aims to encourage and support young people in their return to education, improve pathways into employment, as well as encourage community participation.  In 2001 the success of the program was recognised by the Tasmanian State Government through receipt of the 2001 State Award for Educational Excellence.
Do you want to get back into education, but find it difficult in mainstream schools? Are you 16-18 years old, but have not completed year 11 & 12? Then why not call Youth ARC on +61 (03) 6231 5150.

Ed Zone

The need for an alternate program for grade 7 - 10 was identified when young people under the age of 16 years, who had or were about to disengage from education, continually approached ALTed and Youth ARC staff asking to enrol in the ALTed Program. There was also wider recognition by the Youth Services sector that a similar program to ALTed was needed for the younger age group. In April 2003 Ed Zone an initiative of the Tasmanian Government, supported by Elizabeth College and the Hobart City Council was launched. Ed Zone aims to provide an alternative education provision for young people aged between 13-16 who have not been enrolled in mainstream school for at least one term.

Are you aged 13-16?  Not been at school for at least a term?  Are you willing to commit to EdZone for 15-20 hours per week?  Then call Youth ARC on +61 (03) 6231 5150.
