Public Question Time

In accordance with the Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulations 2005, Council conducts a Public Question Time forum to enable members of the community to ask questions on Council related matters.

A period of fifteen minutes, if required, will be set aside at the beginning of each ordinary Council meeting to conduct Public Question Time. The Chairman will endeavour to deal with as many questions as possible at each meeting. If a response to a question cannot be provided at the meeting, or if time constraints do not permit all questions to be put, the Council will take these matters in writing, on notice to be answered at a later meeting.

The public is reminded that the Forum is designed to accommodate questions only. Neither questions nor answers will be debated.

The attached procedures have been formulated to assist those participating in the Forum and members of the public are requested to observe these procedures when proposing questions.

All written questions are to be submitted on the prescribed Question Form, which appears on the reverse of the Procedures.

The Local Government (Meeting Procedures) Regulations also provide that the Chairman may invite any member of the public present at an ordinary meeting of the Council to ask questions relating to the activities of the Council.

Procedures and Question Forms are available from the following locations:

  • Council's Customer Service Centre, 16 Elizabeth Street (cnr Elizabeth and Davey Streets)
  • Hobart Town Hall Reception Desk, Macquarie Street entrance
  • The Council Chamber at the Town Hall

Questions must reach the Council by no later than 5.00 pm on the day, seven days* prior to the day of the meeting at which they are to be read and may be lodged via the following locations:

*This period includes Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays but does not include, the day on which the question is provided and the day of the meeting.

Members of the public are advised that no reliance should be placed on any verbal answer provided during Public Question Time. Before relying on any answer, members of the public are required to receive a response in writing from the Council
