Hobart is culturally and religiously diverse with over fifty different languages spoken within the municipal area.
With a large influx of European immigrants settling in and around Hobart post second world war and more recently humanitarian entrants from Asia, South America, the Balkans and the horn of Africa, Hobart has welcomed people from all over the world for many years.
On 25th October 2004 the Hobart City Council was declared the first Refugee Welcome Zone in Tasmania and the 50th in Australia. The declaration is a Refugee Council of Australia initiative. The Council is also involved in a number of activities that support and celebrate cultural diversity through the Hobart Networking for Harmony Committee and in partnership with government and community organisations.
As well as welcoming people to out city the people of Hobart are interested in maintaining international relations with other cities throughout the world. Hobart has two sister cities, Yaizu, Japan and L'Aquila, Italy. Both of these relationships are supported by community committees
