Australia Day and Citizenship Awards

Australia Day 2009

Australia Day in Hobart will be marked by an Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony and the presentation of the Council's Citizen, Young Citizen and Community Event of the Year Awards at the Sandy Bay Regatta at the Nutgrove Beach Reserve commencing at 11 am.

Australia Day Awards

The Australia Day awards are part of a group of awards co-ordinated through the National Australia Day Council and administered by local councils throughout Australia.

The awards are presented to citizens in recognition of personal achievement and to acknowledge outstanding contributions to the local community.

In recent years recipients of the Hobart City Council awards were required to be resident in the Hobart municipal area, but this has now been changed and nominations are welcomed for anyone who has made a noteworthy contribution to the Hobart community.

The 2009 awards will be presented by the Lord Mayor on Australia Day as part of the Citizenship Ceremony at the Sandy Bay Regatta.

2008 award winners were:

Citizen of the Year

Mrs Jean Panton OAM

Mrs Panton was recognised for her contribution to the local community over many years including the areas of medical research, cultural heritage and the environment.

Young Citizen of the Year

Mr Jacob Miller

Jacob was recognised for his outstanding contribution to social issues and as a role model for young people within the community.
