Welcome to Salamanca Market

Enjoy the sights, sounds, flavours, action and colour of Australia's best outdoor market - proudly operated by Hobart City Council -every Saturday from 8.30am to 3.00pm at Hobart's Salamanca Place.

Set between graceful plane trees and the mellow sandstone facades of historic warehouses, Hobart's famous market at Salamanca Place attracts thousands of locals and visitors, every Saturday of the year.

They come for the food and music, fresh fruit, crisp organic vegetables, hot baked spuds, the warm aroma of a coffee and croissant, busker's singing the blues, stroking a harp or strumming a lively folk song.

They come for breakfast, scrambled eggs and orange juice at a Salamanca bistro, then a stroll along the hundreds of stalls, meeting friendly people who make or grow what they sell.

Salamanca Market highlights fine Tasmanian art & craft including hand-worked glass, innovative design in Tasmanian timbers, stylish clothing, and bold ceramics.

Salamanca Market - Business Sustainability Study

In 2006 the Hobart City Council engaged Hobart based firm Enterprise Marketing and Research Services (EMRS) to undertake a business sustainability study for Salamanca Market.

The principal objective of this study was to provide a detailed written report which evaluated the short, medium and long-term business sustainability of Salamanca Market and identified opportunities for the strategic business development of the Market.  In doing this, the project has:

  • established the economic, marketing and community benefits the Market brings to Hobart and the state
  • undertaken a strategic audit of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) of the Market, with a view to its long term economic sustainability
  • assessed the impact of the current Council conditions, as outlined in Salamanca Market licence agreements and Stallholders’ Guide, on the business viability of individual stallholders and the Market as a whole
  • assessed the role of individual stallholders in contributing to the overall performance of the Market, including an assessment of critical issues affecting the viability of these businesses
  • examined the context of broader retail and business trends / competition in the local and State environment that may impact upon Salamanca Market
  • provided a suite of recommended measures for the future strategic business development of the Market

The EMRS research involved a new survey of all Salamanca Market stallholders, with some two thirds of stallholders responding.  EMRS also included, as part of their study, the results of the survey undertaken by the Salamanca Market Stallholders Association in 2005.

The EMRS research also involved consultation with a broad range of stakeholder groups, including Tourism Tasmania, Tasmanian Ports Corporation Pty Ltd, the Australian Hotels Association, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority, the Tasmanian coach industry, Tasmania South and the Waterfront Business Community Inc.; a survey of 500 members of the general public; as well as desktop research and discussion with operators of The Rocks, Queen Victoria, Prahran and Eumundi markets.

At its meeting on 28 May 2007, the Council endorsed the final Enterprise Marketing and Research Services report - Salamanca Market Sustainability Study (February 2007).

The report’s key recommendations focus on the following topics:

  • Market ownership, management and governance
  • Market vision, objectives, branding and positioning
  • Legal and financial issues
  • Flexibility and market regulation
  • Product mix and categories
  • Tourism strategy

The Council is now working towards the implementation of the report’s recommendations.

This will include the development of an appropriate entertainment program at the market, the continued exploration of improvements to amenities such as toilets, seating and access to ATMs, as well as the development of a transport and access strategy looking at parking, public transport, bicycle parking and drop off points.

The work will also include the development of a Salamanca Market Brand, including appropriate market research to identify the products that target customer markets require.   This will be supplemented by an allocation in the 2007/2008 Annual Plan to develop a dedicated website for the Market.

At its May meeting the Council also endorsed the following draft objectives for the Market:

  • To provide a market for Hobart that is also attractive to intrastate, interstate and international visitors
  • To provide locals and visitors with a cultural experience
  • To provide a market environment which promotes stallholder profitability
  • To provide an outlet for locals to sell their goods without a permanent shop front
  • To encourage innovative Tasmanian producers

These draft objectives will be tested through consultation and be reviewed after twelve months.
