Registrations and Licences

The Council is responsible for the management and enforcement of various matters covered by local laws, permits, registrations and licences which are required for many activities to assist us to live in a safe and happy community.

All food premises, public swimming pools, spas and activities that involve public health are required to be licensed and inspected annually.

The Council is committed to ensuring responsible pet ownership throughout the municipal area.  There are rules and guidelines to assist the community in the management of animals in Hobart, from the care and registration of your pet, to dangerous or nuisance animals.

Busking contributes to the vitality and cultural life of the city. However, to ensure there is no loss of amenity within the area, a permit to busk is required to enable the Council to regulate the performance to ensure that shopkeepers and/or residents are not affected by excessive noise.

Anyone who wishes to operate, manage, conduct entertainment, lease or offer to lease a venue for a Place of Assembly, will need a Place of Assembly license.

The council supports the alfresco dining experience available at the many restaurants that provide table and chairs on footpaths.  An occupation licence issued by the Council is required to be held by all restaurant operators who place tables and chairs and other street furniture on footpaths or in Malls and other public places.

Occupation licences may also be issued to property owners who wish to occupy part of the footpath, roadway or nature strip and exclude access by the general public (Click on Occupation Licence for further details).
