Truganini Reserve, managed by the Parks & Wildlife service, protects a wet gully of native bushland on the south-east flank of Mt Nelson. From the signal station, a steep track descends through forest to follow Cartwright Creek down to the Channel Highway at Taroona. The return walk takes around an hour and a half - well earned refreshments are available at the Mt Nelson Signal Station restaurant. Spend a few minutes walking to the nearby Truganini Memorial.
The semaphore station on the summit of Mt Nelson once relayed messages via a chain of stations from Princes Park in Hobart to Port Arthur. Later, it was used to report shipping movements in the estuary, and today, the Signal station's fine panoramic view is popular when Mt Wellington is cloud covered.
From the Mt Nelson Signal Station lookout at the end of Nelson Road, or frim the Channel Highway, Taroona, near bus stop 32.
