Recycling and Waste

The Hobart City Council aims to provide efficient, reliable and sustainable waste services to meet the needs of the community.

Waste is collected from residential and commercial properties on a weekly basis, whilst recyclables are collected fortnightly.

Waste can cause pollution and impact on our environment if not properly managed.  Disposing of waste that cannot be otherwise avoided, reused or recycled also represents a waste of resources, lost opportunity and a loss of money.

Hobart City Council works in partnership with  government, industry and community sectors to facilitate sustainable solutions for waste management.  Council's landfill site operates from McRobies Gully in South Hobart, where electricity generation from landfill gas has commenced with the commissioning of a 1 megawatt generator by AGL.

To find out your collection day for waste (weekly) and recycling (fortnightly) please refer to the kerbside collection area map.

Each spring the Hobart City Council provides two free collection services, a hard waste collection and green waste collection.  Specific dates are advertised closer to the collection and can be found at the Green Waste and Annual Clean up page.

Worm farming is another great way to compost food scraps.  Worms are extremely productive, they will eat most of your kitchen waste and turn it into a high-quality fertiliser, which can be added to your garden soil and your potted or indoor plants.  Visit the Composting and Worm Farms page for more information.
