Domestic Waste Collection

About your wheelie bin

For the collection of non-recyclable refuse from residences and commercial properties the Hobart City Council currently has in place a collection system involving wheelie bins and automatic, side loading, compactor trucks.

The wheelie bin remains the property of the Hobart City Council and should not be removed from the property if you change residence.  This allows Council to replace any damaged or lost bins at no cost to the resident.

Identification

To help identify your bin in the street, write your property (and unit) number on the rear of the bin.

Each Wheelie Bin has a serial number that allows Council to match it with the property it was issued to.

Bin Size

All residential properties are allocated a 120 litre bin which will hold approximately  two of the current standard garbage bags.  If after a three month trial, larger families who actively participate in kerbside recycling are finding they need a greater capacity, they may apply for a 240 litre upgrade (request must come from the owner), charges apply see below.

Costs

For households that have received a larger 240 litre wheelie bin an annual charge of $100 will be charged through the rating system.  A rebate system is in place for those households with five or more permanent residents.  This rebate is for the full $100 and will apply from the moment a Statutory Declaration (available from customer services) is received stating that five or more people reside at the property.

Waste types

What sort of waste can I place in the wheelie bin?

The system is for the collection of non-recyclable, household waste.

Please do not place in your wheelie bin

  • Hazardous waste or sharps
  • Hot ashes
  • Oils, paints, solvents or other liquids
  • Heavy builders rubble, car parts, large timber or metal pieces

Note: It is preferred that green waste be taken to McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre, where it can be converted into compost & mulch.  There are also three green waste collections per year so residents should try to avoid placing green waste in the wheelie bin.

How to prevent offensive odours in your wheelie bin

Wrap kitchen scraps in paper and place in a tightly sealed plastic bag such as your supermarket bag before placing in your bin.

You can freeze waste foods (particularly meat & fish) and place them in the bin just before collection.  This slows down the bacteria that break food down and cause odours.

Ensure that your bin is not over full and that the fly proof lid is properly closed.

Keep your bin in a cool, shady area.

Use your home compost bin or worm farm for materials that decay.

Collection days

To find out your refuse & recycling collection day please select the link below to search a list in PDF format or alternatively phone Council on (03) 6238 2966.

Collection days

Please note that Hobart City Council do not collect on Good Friday or Christmas Day.  Collection for Good Friday will be on the Thursday before and collection for Christmas Day will be either the day before or the day after and will be advertised closer to the date.  Collection services run as usual for all other days of the year.

Wheelie bins can be placed out the night before or prior to 6:00am on the morning of collection.  Trucks will pick up between the hours of 6.00am and 5.00pm.

Wheelie bins should be returned inside your property boundary within 24 hours of collection.  This will help reduce the chance of theft or vandalism.

Collection Do's & Dont's

Placement for collection

Only waste presented in Hobart City Council wheelie bins will collected.  Any loose refuse or non Hobart City Council Bins will not be collected.  The garbage collection system will require you to place your bin out in the correct manner for collection.  The new single operating vehicle will have a side operating mechanical arm that will reach down to pickup your wheelie bin.

This means that bins will need to be placed at the kerbside next to your driveway, in a clear and unobstructed area with the wheels facing the property.

2 Bins and Crate - Correct

Please do not place your wheelie bin:

  • under or next to a tree, power pole, street sign or other obstruction

Bin near post - Incorrect

  • within 1 metre of another wheelie bin or recycling crate

2 Bins and Crate - Incorrect

  • behind a parked car

Car in front of Bin - Incorrect

Please do not:

  • overfill your bin

Bin Overfull

  • place anything on top of or lean any objects against bin

Any of the above will impede the lifting mechanism or could mean that your bin cannot be emptied.

Residents are encouraged to find the best location possible according to the above criteria.  In most cases placement will remain in the same position currently used for refuse collection.  If Council still experiences service difficulties residents should note where the bin is left after collection, as this will be the preferred pickup point.  For more problematic locations residents will be informed of alternative collection points as they arise.
