More than half the area of Hobart is "the bush" - the Hobart City Council manages almost 3,000 hectares of bushland within the city boundaries.
Hobart's bush extends from the alpine heathlands of Mt Wellington, down the densley-forested foothills, through the suburbs, and into the city itself - the Queen's Domain, within walking distance of busy shops and offices, is a 170 hectare reserve containing rare, original native grassy woodland.
Mt Wellington and its foothills have a special presence for Hobart people, who value and cherish their bushland reserves. And they use them, too - for summer picnics and barbecues, snow play in winter, nature observation, and for scenic bushwalks, gentle or demanding, all year-round.
Among the icons of this small and beautiful city, Hobart's bushland has an important place alongside the sparkling river, the snow-capped mountain, Salamanca's bustle and fun, bright sails on the harbour, and sunshine on Georgian sandstone.
