THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES FOR THE 2009 CITY OF HOBART ART PRIZE HAS NOW EXPIRED. 

A cultural initiative of the Hobart City Council in partnership with the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

The 2009 City of Hobart Art Prize is open to artists, designers and craftspeople nation-wide. It brings together contemporary visual arts, craft and design practice in a single exhibition.

AIMS OF THE CITY OF HOBART ART PRIZE

The City of Hobart Art Prize seeks to:

> Promote art, craft and design practice in a way that is inclusive

> Encourage experimentation within and across art, craft and design forms

> Present an exciting exhibition that offers a ‘snap shot’ of contemporary practice

> Provide the City of Hobart with a collection of significant works

> Showcase the work of Tasmanian artists, crafts people and designers within a national context

CATEGORIES

The City of Hobart Art Prize categories, for which the main prizes are awarded, change every year. The 2009 categories are Drawing and Sculpture. The guidelines for these categories are as follows:

Drawing - Work on paper or other support in any medium associated with the practice of drawing.

Any wall-mounted work to be included in the final exhibition shall not be more than 2.5m in height or width, or be more than 50cm in depth. The work is to be presented ready to attach to the wall.  All fixtures and fittings are to be included with detailed instructions for installation. If the overall weight exceeds 20kg handles or straps to be attached.

Sculpture – Three dimensional object or installation not limited to any particular material or process.

Any three dimensional work to be included in the final exhibition shall not have a footprint of more than 2m squared with a height restriction of 2m. Any individual component shall not exceed 50kg in weight with any overall weight not exceeding 200kg. If the sculpture has a number of separate components, it should be freighted in separate crates, each weighing no more than 50kg. The work is to be presented ready for assembly or display.  All fixtures and fittings required are to be included with detailed instructions for installation.

PRIZES

City of Hobart Art Prize – 2 x $15,000 acquisitive prizes (one in each category).

The Moorilla Prize – 1 x $7,500 non-acquisitive prize.

This non-acquisitive prize sponsored by Moorilla is open to artists, crafts-people and designers who are selected for the final City of Hobart Art Prize exhibition and who were either born, are presently residing in, or have resided for a period of five years or more in Tasmania. The winner will also receive a dozen bottles of Moorilla limited release premium wine. Because of the acquisitive nature of the prize, the winners of the City of Hobart Art Prize will not be considered for the Moorilla Prize.

Both the City of Hobart Art Prize and the Moorilla Prize include return air travel from within Australia to Hobart (if won by eligible entrants living interstate) to attend the exhibition opening. Boutique accommodation will be provided at Moorilla on the night of the exhibition opening (for interstate prize winners or Tasmanian based prize winners living outside of greater Hobart). The provision of these travel and accommodation benefits will be at the discretion of the Hobart City Council and Moorilla.

The People’s Choice Prize.

A non-acquisitive prize of $1,000 for the most popular work on exhibition.

JUDGING PANEL

The members of the judging panel for the 2009 City of Hobart Art Prize are:

> Deborah Edwards, Senior Curator, Australian Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.

> Jane Kinsman, Senior Curator International Prints, Drawings and Illustrated Books, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra.

> David Handley, Director, Sculpture by the Sea, Sydney.

> Jane Stewart, Coordinating Curator of Art, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Hobart.

The Moorilla Prize will be judged by a panel comprising the City of Hobart Art Prize judges and two representatives from Moorilla.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

General Conditions

> Entrants must have been residents of Australia for 12 months prior to 20 June 2009.

> Entrants must submit works in accordance with the terms and conditions set out in this entry form

> Entries representing partnerships between individuals will be accepted on the understanding that each partner’s contribution is deemed equal.

>Entrants must adhere to overall size and weight limitations as detailed in the category descriptions.

> Employees of the Hobart City Council Community Development Division and members of their families are ineligible to enter the Prize.

>Employees of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery are ineligible to enter the People’s Choice Prize.

Selection Criteria

All entries and final works entered for the Prize exhibition will be judged in regard to overall excellence, originality and innovation in design or concept, use of materials and technique.

Works for Final Exhibition

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery reserves the right to determine the most appropriate method for displaying works to ensure public safety, and to refuse to display any works deemed inappropriate or unsafe.

Delivery of Work for Final Exhibition

Selected entrants are wholly responsible for the timely delivery to, and collection of works from, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery. It is the sole responsibility of selected entrants to determine whether works are to be delivered to the exhibition venue by hand, by commercial carrier, or by Australia Post.  Australian air Express is the preferred carrier and a discounted rate for artwork freighted to and from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for those participating in the City of Hobart Art Prize has been negotiated. Please note the discounted rate does not apply to the preffered carrier’s overnight service.

All works must be delivered to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery between 10.00am and 5.00pm on Saturday 20 June, 2009.

Packing of Work in Final Exhibition

All works submitted for exhibition must be adequately and securely packaged, with this packaging being labelled and easily reusable for the return of works. Works will be repacked according to the sender’s instructions with the original packaging, which should be clearly identified as belonging to a particular work.  While all due care will be taken in the repackaging of these items, the Hobart City Council and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and/or their agents, will accept no liability for loss and/or damage during transit.

Return of Work in Final Exhibition

The collection of artworks at the conclusion of the exhibition (except for those acquired by the Hobart City Council) is the responsibility of the selected entrant. Artwork must be collected from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery between 10.00am and 5.00pm, Friday 14 August, 2009. No responsibility will be taken for work not collected from the gallery after this date.

Insurance

The insurance of art and craft works in transit to and from the exhibition venue is the sole responsibility of selected entrants.  While stored prior to judging and while on exhibition in the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, insurance will be provided by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Exhibition Opening

Those entrants selected for final exhibition will receive an invitation to the official opening of the 2009 City of Hobart Art Prize at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery.

Publicity and Promotion

All entrants selected for the final exhibition shall allow their works to be reproduced for the exhibition catalogue, web site, invitations and any other promotional material associated with the Prize. The Hobart City Council reserves the right to reproduce the winning works in all categories in subsequent Hobart City Council printed and electronic publications and promotional material.  Entrants selected for the final exhibition shall also allow for the reproduction of works for the fair purpose of study, review and archival purposes associated with the City of Hobart Art Prize and the Hobart City Council’s cultural programs.

Images for Exhibition Catalogue

A high quality, colour catalogue will be produced to accompany the 2009 City of Hobart Art Prize exhibition. Entrants short listed for the exhibition will need to provide professional documentation of their work for the exhibition catalogue.

The Hobart City Council will recognise the authorship of work used in publicity or promotion now and in the future. The rights of reproduction of works given to the Hobart City Council are limited to the above purpose only.
