Imagine 2025

Imagine 2025 Hobart

The Hobart City Council has embarked on the development of a 20 year vision for Hobart – Hobart 2025!

Project Update - October 2006

The support provided by the community, particularly in developing something as far reaching as a 20-year vision, has been tremendous. The results have now been collated and the Council has developed Seven Future Directions Statements resulting from this feedback. The Council has endorsed the statements as the Vision for Hobart.

These statements will be used to inform strategic plans and long term infrastructure and service planning in order to meet our collective vision for Hobart 2025.

The results have been distributed to the community in a Special Edition of the Capital City News.

Project Update - March 2006

In the March edition of Capital City News the project to create a vision for Hobart in 2025 was launched and readers were invited to provide their views on what Hobart should be like in 20 years time.

In response to that opportunity over 650 replies were received either by the reply paid attachment in the Capital City News or online through the website created for the project. This was an outstanding response and showed the level of interest in the city and its future direction.

In addition through March, April and May a series of community workshops were held involving a significant body of people including local school communities, business, sporting groups, resource management and environmental groups, community associations and randomly selected residents. Over 600 people were invited to participate with around 250 taking up the opportunity.

Meetings have already been held with key organisations to determine their priorities and their vision for Hobart. These included the University of Tasmania, Tas Ports, TCCI, Hobart Airport, Antarctic Division, CSIRO, Tasmanian Property Council, Tasmania Police, Arts Tasmania, the Sullivans Cove Waterfront Authority, and Tasmania Together.

Children in the Town HallOn Tuesday 16th May the Council played host to around 65 students from 17 schools across the city.

The students, ranging from grade 6 to college, were invited to the Town Hall to participate in a workshop for the 20 year Vision project. The format was the same as the workshops run across the community.

The objective was to get the views of tomorrow’s civic and business leaders as to what sort of city they would like Hobart to be in 2025 and also to support and balance the views that we have currently obtained from the broad community, key businesses and Aldermen.

We certainly received a different perspective and there was no shortage of creative solutions, ranging from teleportation, free buses and more of them, alternative fuels and non polluting cars to more fun events for young people to reduce vandalism and graffiti, activities to promote healthy living in the community, greater investment in medical, scientific and technological research, more opportunities for education and jobs and a safe, friendly, colourful and tolerant city.

It was a great opportunity to tap into a unique resource and our advice is that some of the schools had discussed the project in advance of the workshop and run their own sessions on the future of Hobart, providing material for the students that represented their school.

As a lead up to the community workshops Princess Street Primary grade 6 students created a number of pieces of art representing what they thought the City would be like in 2025. The material was exhibited at the workshops and is now on display at he Council’s Customer Service Centre. Their work can also be viewed on this website.

The material from all workshops, online submissions and responses through our Capital City News supplement are now being analysed to identify the key themes that will underpin our future vision for the city. In all we have close to 1,000 contributions covering a wide range of opinions.

The Councils objective in this project was to widen the stakeholder input to our planning. This has certainly been achieved in the approach taken and has exceeded expectations.
