Traffic management on Council roads

The design and construction of alterations to the layout of roads (other than those controlled by DIER) is the responsibility of the Hobart City Council.

If you wish to make suggestions about ways to improve the function of our road network for cars, trucks, cyclists, pedestrians, public transport and other road users please phone (03) 6238 2835 or Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Linemarking

Linemarking (other than yellow No Stopping lines, and lines associated with parking bays) on all Tasmanian roads is generally the responsibility of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy & Resources (DIER). Any issues relating to the need for new linemarking or the maintenance of existing linemarking should be either directed to DIER or referred to Council and it will be passed onto DIER by Council Officers.

If you have any questions about yellow No Stopping linemarking, or linemarking associated with parking bays, please report the location and request by phoning (03) 6238 2813 or Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Traffic Control Signage (give way, stop, one way, keep left etc)

The approval of any alteration to traffic control signs on Tasmanian Roads (other than signage associated with parking, street and place names), is also the responsibility of DIER.  If you have a suggestion about changing an existing sign or requesting a new traffic control sign, please refer to DIER.

The Hobart City Council has authority from DIER to replace existing signage that has been damaged or missing. If you know of an existing sign that is damaged, or missing please report the location and type of sign by phoning (03) 6238 2813 or Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Cycling

The Hobart City Council's cycling strategy Bikeplan was compiled in 1997. Extracts from the strategy can be viewed by clicking the attached link. The full strategy can be viewed at Council's Office.

A Principal Bicycle Network has been developed for comment.

A Draft Hobart Regional Arterial Bicycle Network Plan has also been prepared by the Greater Hobart Councils and CyclingSouth, with the assistance of the DIER and the Australian Government's Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

Road safety on Council roads

The Hobart City Council is committed to improved road safety on our roads. If you are aware of any road safety problems please bring them to our attention.

Any road safety issues can be reported by phoning (03) 6238 2835 or Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Road humps

The installation of road humps can result in a reduction in vehicle speeds on local roads. Road humps can also result in the loss of on-street parking, an increase in vehicle noise (through heavy braking and accelerating), and increased reaction times for emergency vehicles seeking to use a street.

Council has a set of Guidelines for the investigation of public requests for the installation of road humps. If you are interested in having road humps installed on your street, please call (03) 6238 2835 or Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.

Road closures for special events / Special works on Council roads

Under Clause 19 & 21 of the Local Government (Highways) Act 1982, the Hobart City Council has the authority to close local roads for the purposes of conducting special events or to facilitate construction activities.

Closures cause inconvenience for road users, residents, and traders. Closures for special events are only considered when it is felt that benefits for the community justify the closure.

For more information, please phone (03) 6238 2835 during business hours.  Alternatively, Email: hcc@hobartcity.com.au.
