The Municipal Standard Drawings and Specification have recently been superseded and should not be used by consultants and designers in the preparation of drawings and specifications for new public assets.
Hobart City Council as of 1st January 2008 has adopted the “Tasmanian Councils’ Standards for Subdivisions” published by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia’s (IPWEA) and the “Fire Hydrant Guidelines: Tasmanian Division” for the creation of new public assets.
These standards provide guidance to designers and contractors in the creation of new public assets and are intended to be used as a reference to ensure that a common approach is taken throughout Tasmania. Rather than providing strict prescriptive requirements, the intention of these standards it to integrate the information into the design at hand, allowing greater flexibility to meet site specific requirements. The designer will remain fully responsible for all aspects of their design.
The “Tasmainan Councils’ Standards for Subdivisions” are available from the IPWEA website.
The “Fire Hydrant Guidelines: Tasmanian Division” is available from the Fire Hydrant Guidelines page.
Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA) has developed a suite of standards for the design and installation of water supply and sewage infrastructure. The “Tasmanian Councils’ Standards for Subdivisions” has incorporated the WSSA Water Supply Code of Australia (Melbourne Retail Water Agencies Edition) and Sewerage Code of Australia (Melbourne Retail Water Agencies Edition) as part of its suite of standards.
The WSAA Water Supply Code of Australia and Sewerage Code can be purchased from the WSAA online bookshop.
The WSAA is the primary industry body representing all major water agencies in Australia and covers a number of aspects of the water industry including technical design requirements, product/material specification and research into new technology and products.

These specifications and drawings were prepared to assist in the design and construction of municipal road and hydraulic infrastructure. The documents are designed to be used in conjunction with each other and under the supervision of Council officers who are trained and experienced in their application. The Council does not consider the documents suitable for use for any other purpose.
If you use these documents for any purpose which is not consistent with the above (including, without limitation, for carrying out any investigations, design, construction, engineering, maintenance or other work), you do so at your own risk.
The drawings only provide the minimum requirements. It is the responsibility of the designer to ensure that designs comply with all the relevant Australian Standards and other regulations.
It is the responsibility of the designer and the developer to ensure that safe construction methods are used and that the construction work complies with the approved design drawings and all the relevant standards and regulations.
