Council undertakes a street cleaning and public litterbin collection service.
Street Sweeping
In general suburban streets and footpaths are cleaned every 10 to 12 weeks. Streets in the Central Business District (CBD), Sullivans Cove and other commerical areas are cleaned on a more regular basis.
Council also has in place an Autumn Leaf Cleaning program, which usually commences in May.
Stormwater Pit Cleaning
Council has in place a stormwater pit cleaning program. Stormwater pits are cleaned where there is a history of flooding. Council also has in place numerous gross pollutant traps within stormwater pits. Council's workforce removes rubbish from these traps on a regular basis.
CBD and Shopping Centre Cleaning
Council has in place a cleaning regime for the CBD, Wellington Court, Sullivans Cove and shopping precincts (such as North Hobart, Sandy Bay, Salamanca Place). These areas are cleaned by Council's workforce using a combination of mechanical sweepers and sweeping by hand.
Cigarette Butt Removal
Council has carried out audits on rubbish that enters waterways. It was found that cigarette butts form the majority of this waste. Council has subsequently installed a large number of cigarette butt bins through Hobart's CBD and shopping precincts. These bins are cleaned by Council's workforce on a regular basis.
