Green Waste and Annual Clean Up

Green Waste Collection

Green waste collection service

The Hobart City Council currently offers a green waste collection service, with collections scheduled for October 2011 and April 2012. (These dates may be subject to change, please take notice of public advertisements closer to the date). In addition, residents have the option to take their green waste to McRobies Waste Management Centre for drop off at around half the charge of normal refuse.

The next green waste collection will occur on your normal waste and recycling collection day of the week, for the week 16 April 2012 until 20 April 2012.

The maximum amount of green waste that will be collected from each residence is 2m3 (ie 2m x 1m x 1m). Amounts greater than this will not be collected.

A steady increase in the participation rate in recent times has indicated a strong desire amongst the community to continue with the service, with a number of residents indicating their satisfaction and support for the level and quality of service being offered.

One problem in the past has been the level of contamination following processing and whilst now less frequent, many residents are continuing to place smaller clippings in plastic bags meaning that their green waste cannot be collected.

The Hobart City Council also requests that bundles be tied with string and while most of this string is removed by collection personnel a small amount inevitably remains. These pieces of string contaminate stockpiles which can result in a lower quality end use product. The Council therefore request for residents to use biodegradable string to tie off bundles for the next green waste collection.

Please place material out the night before your normal collection day, as you would with recycling and waste.

Residents are asked to take note of the requirements below and for general enquires please telephone (03) 6238 2900.

Residents may place out:

  • Bundles of tree and shrub prunings tied with biodegradable string. Individual pieces should be approximately 1.5m long or less and 10cm or less in diameter for safety reasons;
  • Leaves, grass and small prunings may be placed into hard plastic containers similar in size to your old 50 litre recycling crate.  The plastic containers/crates will be returned kerbside after emptying.

Residents should not:

  • Set out green waste in plastic bags or cardboard boxes;
  • Set out any general rubbish;
  • Set out green waste in excess of the 2m3 limit.

Green waste contaminated with general rubbish or plastic cannot be composted and will not be collected.

The Council will process garden prunings into compost and mulch products that are available for sale on site at McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre or order by calling 0408 396 322.

Fire abatement green waste disposal assistance

The Hobart City Council will continue with an initiative to assist residents in preparing their properties for the bushfire season.  Residents will be allowed to dispose of clean green waste to the McRobies Gully Waste Management Centre free of charge on certain weekends over summer.  The next scheduled date for this service is Saturday 21 January and Sunday 22 January 2012.
