The Council is seeking the community's views on a proposal to extend the current alcohol-free provisions in Hobart's inner city parks.
It is proposed that the following parks would be designated alcohol-free 24 hours per day:
- St David's Park
- Salamanca Lawns
- North Hobart Cultural Park and Skate Park
It is also proposed that the following parks would be designated as alcohol-free from 8pm to 8am daily:
- The Hobart Regatta Grounds
- The University Rose Gardens
- John Doggett Park in West Hobart
- Soundy Park in North Hobart
- Hobart Rivulet Linear Park from Molle Street, up to, but excluding Cascade Gardens
These changes are proposed in response to an increase in the number of reports of drunkenness and anti-social behaviour in the parks, and to avoid the displacement of these behaviours to other nearby parks.
It is important to note that special liquor permits can still be sought from the Council for specific events and functions in these parks.
Implementation of this proposal requires amendment to the areas prescribed as public places for the purposes of the Police Offences Act 1935.
The Council is committed to ensuring that Hobart's beautiful parks remain safe public spaces for all members of the community to enjoy.
